WOW! This book was full of stuff. Blood. Vampires. History. The book is basically a what if fiction of Abraham Lincoln's life. "What if there were vampires? And all the death in Lincoln's life was caused by them in one way or another?" What if.....
The book is written as a mixture of journal entries and research. I really liked that mix in the format and it made the story much more interesting. Having Lincoln's voice and thoughts on the crazy situations he found himself helped to move the story along. But toward the middle of the book something happened. (Don't worry this is not a spoiler) The book began to lose all it's pace and started to drag on and on. I am not a real history buff so this was not easy to get through when it was all history. I was also very shocked at the detailed violence in the book. When they get to the civil war section the violence is jacked up a notch or two and I wanted to skip it soo bad. It was gross and nasty! I hate to say it but those civil war images are kinda stuck in my mind.
As for the narrator, Scott Holst I felt he did a great and wonderful read of Abraham Lincoln and H. But the monotone voice in all the other characters started to become boring and monotonous. I didn't mind the southern twang he added to the voices but when he was reading Martin Luther King Jr I was too through. This audiobook soooo needed a cast. It would have improved the story overall if there where new and unique voices for at least a few people in the book.
I know the movie is out on DVD now and I might get it just to see how they interrupted the book. And if the grossness was skipped over.
I have to say that the overall concept is outstanding and the follow through on the story line is perfect. But it is lacking in the audiobook dept and the middle of the story dragged on and on. I thought it was...
