My 2014 DNF List

Every year I try my best to completely read every book I start before the end of the year.  This is only a habit I started when I started book blogging 3 years ago.  I have no idea where it came from but it's just one of the many rules I stick with to make blogging "fun".
I know there are a big group of book bloggers that have a 50 page-ish rule out there.  You know the rule.  If you get to page 50 and you don't like it then you just put it down and never pick it up again.  Sometimes you might get the urge to post the book info and file it under the DNF tag but I am a bit...different and my DNF list is too.

What do I call a DID NOT FINISH book?
If at the end of the year I have not finished a book because of the following reasons it becomes a DNF
1.  I put it down and forgot about it because I started something else.
2.  I lost interest in the subject.  This happens with Non-Fiction mostly.
3.  I ran out of time.  I was reading it and the year ended before the book.
4. I got to the halfway point and thought to myself "Why am I doing this to myself?  Just let it go!!"

I like to hold out hope there will be something good about a book past page 50.  Page 50 is still the intro and set up to me so I need more before I can put it down.
This year I have a total of 4 books I am filing under the DNF list for various reasons.

The Elephant Keepers Children

http://amzn.to/1yJUenH

Synopsis

Told from the precocious perspective of fourteen-year-old Peter, The Elephant Keepers' Children is about three siblings and how they deal with life alongside their eccentric parents. Peter's father is a vicar, his mother is an artisan, and both are equally and profoundly devout. The family lives on the (fictional) island of Finø, where people of all religious faiths coexist peacefully. Yet, nothing is at it seems.
When Peter's parents suddenly go missing, Peter and his siblings fear the worst--has their parents' relentless quest to boost church attendance finally put them in danger? Told with poignancy and humor, The Elephant Keepers' Children is a fascinating exploration of fundamentalism versus spiritual freedom, the vicissitudes of romantic and familial love, and the triumph of the human spirit.

DNF becuase it was boring.  I am not sure what this book is really about and where it was going.  I listened to the audiobook and had to keep my mind from wondering all over the place.  I am 50/50 about going back to complete it.  I am curious if the ending helps the overall story at all.  I selected it because the cover is pretty and I saw the cover on other book blogs.

Wrapped in Rainbows

Synopsis

A woman of enormous talent and remarkable drive, Zora Neale Hurston published seven books, many short stories, and several articles and plays over a career that spanned more than thirty years. Today, nearly every black woman writer of significance -- including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker -- acknowledges Hurston as a literary foremother, and her 1937 masterpiece Their Eyes Were Watching God has become a crucial part of the modern literary canon.
Wrapped in Rainbows, the first biography of Zora Neale Hurston in more than twenty-five years, illuminates the adventures, complexities, and sorrows of an extraordinary life. Acclaimed journalist Valerie Boyd delves into Hurston's history -- her youth in the country's first incorporated all-black town, her friendships with luminaries such as Langston Hughes, her sexuality and short-lived marriages, and her mysterious relationship with vodou. With the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression, and World War II as historical backdrops, Wrapped in Rainbows not only positions Hurston's work in her time but also offers riveting implications for our own.

DNF because it is a chunky book.  This year I have been busy and reading a chunky book is not in my schedule.  It was a Mocha Girls Read book of the Month for March and I was into the book but after page 50 it got slow and not so interesting.  Don't get me wrong Zora's life is interesting but this book did not hold me continually.  Some parts were great and moving along other parts...not so much.  I will finish this book one day.  Just not this one day this year.

I completed 34% of this book.

DNF this audiobook because it is hard to have a work and try kind of relationship book in audio form.  Some of the stuff seemed silly to me and I thought "OK now let me try it."  But it was hard because I wanted to bookmark it and open it later to look over it.  I think I could handle the book much better than the audiobook.  If I run across another free copy then I would love to finish it.  Just not in audiobook.

The Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel (The Elm Creek Quilts)

Synopsis

Another season of Elm Creek Quilt Camp has come to a close, and Bonnie Markham faces a bleak and lonely winter ahead, with her quilt shop out of business and her divorce looming. A welcome escape comes when Claire, a beloved college friend, unexpectedly invites her to Maui to help launch an exciting new business: a quilter’s retreat set at a bed and breakfast amid the vibrant colors and balmy breezes of the Hawaiian Islands. Soon Bonnie finds herself looking out on sparkling waters and banyan trees, planning quilting courses, and learning the history and intricacies of Hawaiian quilting, all the while helping Claire run the inn.

As Bonnie’s adventure unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that Claire’s new business isn’t the only excitement in store for her. Her cheating, soon-to-be ex-husband decides he wants her stake in Elm Creek Quilts, which threatens not only her financial well-being but her dearest friendships as well. Luckily she has the artistic challenge of creating her own unique Hawaiian quilt pattern to distract her—and new friends like Hinano Paoa, owner of the Nä Mele Hawai‘i Music Shop, who introduces Bonnie to the fascinating traditions of Hawaiian culture and reminds her that love can be found when and where you least expect it.

DNF this book in time. But I will. I have read several books in this series and I will finish this one.  Next year!  Promise!  Then the 2013 DNF list will be one book shorter.  This was just not my year of physical books

I completed 33% of this book.
It seems like the DNF list gets bigger and bigger.  My first year of blogging I only had 1 book and I saw the movie so I might not finish it ever.  Last year I had 2 books but I finished one of them this year.  So that one is off that list!
With four on the list right now I am shocked at myself and I will get to some of them.  I will!  One day!  I think the next Read-a-thon I should make this list the first priority.

Why?
Because, I honestly don't want to have a book blog with only 4 and 5 star books on it.  I mean, heck, I paid to have a 1 star graphic made so I might as well use it.
AAAAA!!!! THE POWER!!! (insert evil laughter)
LOL!

So what does your DNF list look like now that the year is over?  Big list?  Do tell?
