Birthdays, Audiobooks and Giveaways!

It's June and that means a few things here at My Little Pocketbooks.
One, most coupons are going to expire soon.  (hehheee)
Two, it's Audiobook Book and...Three, It's my Birthday Month!

* happy dance*

To start off the birthday celebrations, I want to give one lucky reader a free audiobook.
The wonderful people at Audible.com have graciously donated a download of THE HOLLOW GROUND by Natalie S. Harnett, (narrated by Luci Christian) for one lucky winner.

But first let's chat with the author Natalie S. Harnett!
ME: Welcome to My Little Pocketbooks Natalie. Can you give us a quick summary of the book? No spoilers please.
NATALIE: Inspired by real-life events, the underground mine fires ravaging a Pennsylvania coal town lead eleven-year-old Brigid Howley to make a grisly discovery in a long-abandoned bootleg mine shaft. In the aftermath, old secrets threaten to prove just as dangerous to the Howleys as the burning, hollow ground beneath their feet.
ME: Which character is your favorite? And why?
NATALIE: Gram is definitely my fave. She’s so smart despite being so uneducated. She’s such a spitfire and has overcome SO many difficult situations. She lived in a time when the man was head of the household, yet she somehow manages to be both deferential to her husband and rule the roost. She’s so calloused and hard, yet she managed to keep a part of herself soft. That’s a huge achievement and I love her for it!
ME: Are there any parts of the story taken from your life?
NATALIE: There’s nothing from my life but there is from the lives of other people I know. The experiences at the underwear mill come from my grandmother’s neighbor, and many of the unkind things that Ma does come from experiences that my mother’s friend had while growing up. The undiagnosed learning disabilities that Ma and Brother struggle with come from my aunt’s experiences as well as one of my student’s.

ME: Since we are in June audiobook month? What are 2 audiobooks you love?
NATALIE: MADAME BOVARY by Gustave Flaubert

A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith

THE STRANGER by Albert Camus
ME: What are you reading/listening to now?
NATALIE: I’m listening to DEAR LIFE by Alice Munro. Exquisite! And I’m about to start reading A HAND REACHED DOWN TO GUIDE ME by David Gates. I’m currently polishing the draft of a new novel and I find that when I listen/read writers as excellent as Munro & Gates, it makes me write better.
ME: If Hollywood comes Knocking on your door who should play your protagonist?
NATALIE: Elle Fanning. She’s older than Brigid, but I think she could pull it off really well.
Thank you Natalie for joining me today on My  Little Pocketbooks and for giving the readers a chance to win an audiobook of your novel.
